: PhD Candidate: Nanyang Technological University: Singapore

Fabrizio Cola received his master’s degree in Energy Engineering from the Polytechnic School of Turin (Italy) in 2014. Since one year, Fabrizio is a PhD candidate in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

Fabrizio’s research project is carried out in collaboration with ASTAR-SimTech and it focusses on developing novel solutions to harvest low grade waste heat from industrial processes and convert it into cooling power to be used for on-site air conditioning, either through a direct heat-to-cool conversion or though the coupling of generator-cooling cycle.

    Presentation Title
Low Grade Waste Heat Recovery to meet Onsite Cooling Demands

    Abstract
Waste heat is produced in large quantities in many industrial processes and many technologies exists that can recover and convert it into cooling power. This paper reviews the main cooling technologies and propose a scoring method that compares these technologies from the point of view of COP, power density, and cost, using different weightings to simulate different requirements. Simple mathematical models have been used for the estimation of their efficiency of conversion, using a set of fixed boundary conditions. Data about weight, volume and cost of the primary energy vectors have been collected through a market research.
