: Project Manager (International Environmental Projects): Witteveen+Bos Consulting Engineers: The Netherlands

Mr Van der Enden is working as an soil remediation consultant at Witteveen+Bos Consulting engineers since 2001 and has experience of 25 years in this field of activity. In the Netherlands he was responsible for some large and complex remediation projects as project manager and remediation specialist, for instance the remediation of the former gasworks site in Hilversum, remediation of several former train yards and the redevelopment of the former naval airbase in Katwijk. Since 2012 his focus is more on international soil remediation projects, like the final closure of a garbage dumpsite in Kolkata (India), the remediation of evaporation ponds in Tengiz (Kazakhstan) and the remediation of contaminated lakes around Baku (Azerbaijan).

    Presentation Title
Lake Boyuk Shor: Environmental Engineering and Eco-hydrology as Fast Track to Engineering Solutions for Lake Restoration in Azerbaijan

    Abstract
The lakes situated around Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, are ecologically and environmentally heavily impaired. In spring 2013 an assessment of the feasibility of remediation and rehabilitation of the 9 lakes was started. The focus of the feasibility study was on system analysis: getting an understanding of the key factors and processes in the functioning of the lakes. Based on an economical cost-benefit analysis remediation scenarios are developed and assessed. In autumn 2013 the efforts were focused on the remediation of the Boyukshor Lake. The lake is the decor for the first European Games, held in June 2015. At present the restoration of 250 hectares of the lake is finished: a direct result of the multidisciplinary approach in which hydrology, ecology, environmental remediation and hydraulic engineering are interwoven to get from feasibility study through design and engineering to realization within 2 years.
