Retrofitting and Revamping of Water Networks in a Petroleum Refinery
Abstract
Water integration and minimization in chemical plants are beneficial from the point of both economic and environmental impacts. Chemical processes require water as a reactant, separation solvent and/or utility. Waste water from a process can be treated using regeneration units, for reusing in the plant. An optimal water network reduces the consumption of fresh water by efficient reuse and recycling of treated water within the plant. In general, water networks are designed based on a single performance criterion such as total annual cost or fresh water consumption. Many industrial problems have several performance objectives such as profit, energy and environmental impact. In this study, an existing water network in a petroleum refinery is analyzed for retrofitting and revamping, using multi-objective optimization (MOO) approach. The water network is considered for retrofitting and revamping, in order to address the revised environmental regulations and installation of new processes requiring water. These changes in a plant may require changes in the existing network topology. Here, MOO problems are solved using the ε-constraint method along with BARON solver in GAMS.
