: Lecturer : Ngee Ann Polytechnic: Singapore

Dr Guo Huiling graduated from the National University of Singapore with a PhD in Civil Engineering in 2010. She has been involved in research relating to water treatment and water quality management since 2004. For the past 2.5 years, her research focused on the improvement of bioretention systems. She was involved in the planning, design and implementation of laboratory and pilot scale studies on bioretention swales and rain garden.

    Presentation Title
Engineered Soil Media for Bioretention Swales

    Abstract
Bioretention basins and swales are important Active Beautiful Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Design Features that provide effective urban stormwater management. Treatment performances of bioretention systems are influenced by a variety of factors, one of which is the properties/ characteristics of soil filter media. Though sandy loam is often used as filter media, such soils and sand are scarce resources in Singapore. Commercial sand and potting soil vary considerably in their properties and are hence not suitable as filter media. This study evaluates two different engineered soils that were developed as filter media in two modular bioretention swales installed at two tertiary institutes in Singapore.
